This course offers a concise and practical introduction to essential first aid topics, designed to raise awareness and equip delegates with key life-saving skills. Participants will learn how to recognise and respond to heart attacks and cardiac arrests, perform CPR, use an AED, and apply the recovery position. The course also covers managing spinal injuries, embedded objects, severe bleeds, and various types of shock, including anaphylaxis and electrical shock. Additionally, delegates will gain insights into treating animal bites, burns, sprains, and fractures. By the end, participants will feel confident in responding effectively to a range of emergency situations.

UNIT 1
1. Understand the roles and responsibilities of a first aider
i. Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider
ii. Identify how to minimise risk of infection to self and others
iii. Identify the need for consent to provide first aid
2. Be able to assess an emergency situation safely
i. Conduct a scene survey
ii. Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
iii. Summon appropriate assistance when necessary
3. Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty
i. Identify when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
ii. Demonstrate CPR using a Manikin
iii. Identify when to place a casualty into the recovery position
iv. Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position
v. Demonstrate continual monitoring of breathing whilst the casualty is in the recovery position
4. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
i. Identify whether external bleeding is life-threatening
ii. Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty with external bleeding, including life threatening bleeds and embedded objects.
5. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock
i. Recognise when a casualty is suffering from shock (including electric shock)
ii. Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is experiencing shock

1. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
i. Recognise suspected fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains
ii. Identify how to administer first aid for fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains
iii. Demonstrate how to apply a support sling and an elevated sling
2. Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
i. Recognise a suspected head injury and spinal injury
ii. Identify how to administer first aid for a suspected head injury
iii. Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury
3. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
i. Identify how to recognise the severity of burns and scalds
ii. Identify how to administer first aid for burns including: dry heat/wet heat/electricity/chemicals
4. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis
i. Recognise suspected anaphylaxis
ii. Identify and demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty suffering from anaphylaxis
5. Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness
i. Recognise and know how to administer first aid for suspected heart attack
