The winter vomiting bug

by Keith -

‘Vomiting Larry’ is busy testing how far the winter vomiting virus can travel during an episode of being sick.  He is not a retching human – but a simulated vomiting system that shows the virus can travel over 3m (9.8ft) in a projectile episode, according to his creators at the Health and Safety Laboratory. The winter vomiting bug (norovirus) has been responsible for an estimated 880,000 cases of vomiting and diarrhoea in the UK since the summer. It is a hardy virus that clearly spreads with ease – one of the few infections you really can catch from a toilet …

by Keith -

I have been an ITG / ProTrainings instructor for a couple of years now but have always been involved in first aid in some description. This began with my Army career where I was a medic serving in various areas of conflict around the world and when leaving the army I was a medic a RNLI lifeboat for 16 years.   About 5 years ago I moved to the midlands and felt the need to continue with some form of voluntary work so became a Community First Responder for West Midlands Ambulance Service. Many jobs that I attend are memorable, some …

Falls and fall prevention in the Elderly and Disabled

by Keith -

Everyone falls from time to time but injury from falls and slips in the elderly or disabled cannot always be avoided but the risks can be reduced.  Before we look at what to do if you fall lets look at what can cause you to fall. People are at a higher risk of falling if they have had a fall in the past 12 months, balance or ear problems, fear of falling and some mental health problem.  Medicines can increase your risk as there may be side effects that cause sight, balance or make you feel dizzy or light headed. …

James barry (16) real CPR story

by Keith -

Having practiced CPR and attending many first aid courses that my dad has run I was amazed that when I needed to perform CPR for real how my reflexes took over and I automatically got on with the job in hand. I was at college when the caretaker collapsed. People stood around looking but not doing anything. When I approached the man a member of staff was shaking him trying to get him to respond. I immediately tilted the casualties head to open his airway, I then listened for breathing whilst counting to 10. This seemed an eternity but I …

What is Atrial Fibrillation

by Keith -

A normal heart beats between 60 and 100 per minute when resting but someone with Atrial Fibrillation this may be increased to over 140 beats per minute and be irregular.  You may detect this when caring for someone by a pulse check. In the heart of someone with the condition, the upper chambers of the heart called Atria contract randomly and so fast that they do not allow complete filling of the chamber and do not relax correctly between contractions therefore reducing the efficiency of the heart. There are about 500,000 people in the UK with the condition and it …

Don’t Strokes just happen to retired people?

by Keith -

Don’t Strokes just happen to retired people, is a question that some students ask and they are surprised to hear that it is not just the over 60’s age groups that suffer from Strokes.  In the UK about 150,000 people a year suffer from a stoke, which is one person every 5 minutes and Stroke is the third most common death in the UK. About a quarter of Strokes happen to younger people and it is estimated that over 20,000 people under 65 have Strokes.  Strokes can happen at all ages including children and infants.  The risk of Stroke does …

I was working at Truckfest Peterborough 2012, this was the first day of the show and at approx. 8:15-8:30 most of the team were inside our marquee preparing the stand, whilst Kelly and I were outside attaching balloons to the exterior of the marquee.  Kelly entered the marquee to collect something and I went in almost straight after and said a man had collapsed on the floor, I immediately got my first aid kit and ran over to the collapsed man. Kelly and her college (Daryl Moore) followed me over to the man. Upon approach at the scene I immediately …
