Having a fast resting pulse rate, even if you are physically fit, increases death risk, according to a study. Researchers found men with a “high end of normal” resting heart rate of 90 beats per minute had treble the death risk of others with much slower pulses. The investigation, in the journal Heart, looked at nearly 3,000 middle-aged men from Denmark over a period of 16 years. Experts say much more work is needed to confirm and understand the link. Glan Clwyd cancer therapy dog winning own disease fight
A therapy dog used to help patients going through cancer treatment has a poignant twist to his tale after he had seven months of chemotherapy himself. Charlie, a Border collie, makes weekly visits to the North Wales Cancer Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd as part of the Pets As Therapy (PAT) scheme. His owner Jane Howatson said patients were able to empathise with him when they heard his story. Charlie was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes in August 2012. HSE postpone implementing changes relating to First Aid at Work – New date 1st October
We have received notice from the HSE today to say that they have requested further time to consider the proposals and subject to parliamentary approval the proposed changes will come into force in October 2013. Therefore training providers can continue to offer HSE Approved EFAW, FAW and FAW requalification courses or if they prefer and have been approved they can offer the QCF equivalent qualifications for these courses. We have added a Polish version of our AED student manual to go alongside our Polish First Aid manual. All ProTrainings students, whether they complete a classroom, blended or online course receive a free login to our site where they will have access to a download area where you will not only find student manuals but also other useful information to support your course. On this login area, you can also opt for free video refresher emails, change your contact details and with most classroom courses you also have access to videos to review training.

Foreign Objects in the Ears and Nose
Children often push items in their ears and up their noses. Other small items can be lodged in the ears or nose and cause injury. Sometimes the item causes no pain others are painful but both can be distressing to the child and parent. Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds are common in children and adults. They often easily treated and do not return. Nose bleeds can be distressing to children and embarrassing to adults. Blood vessels in nose close to skin and easily damaged by putting things in the nose, stress and illness. Nose bleeds can also be from physical impact to the nose by falling or hit in the face. Be careful in stopping the nose bleed if you think the nose may be broken or if there are any external injuries. Treatment of someone with a nose bleed is first to get them to sit down. …
Atrial Fibrillation
A normal heart beats between 60 and 100 per minute when resting but someone with Atrial Fibrillation this may be increased to over 140 beats per minute and be irregular. You may detect this when caring for someone by a pulse check. In the heart of someone with the condition, the upper chambers of the heart called Atria contract randomly and so fast that they do not allow complete filling of the chamber and do not relax correctly between contractions therefore reducing the efficiency of the heart.
