Headway Suffolk’s aims are to provide rehabilitation and care for adults with a neurological condition and to offer their families respite, support and advice. A neurological condition can mean people have memory loss, mobility, communication and cognitive problems as well as a changed personality. The services offered to assist in recovery and rehabilitation. These services include day rehabilitation in our hubs, clinical therapy, community support, home care, companion dog scheme, and nursing care. They offer a 24/7 bespoke service. They help over 250 people and their families every week. They took one man fishing at 2 a.m. in the morning as this is when he wants his rehab. Their activities in the hubs include art, crafts, and ladies group’s men’s groups, Nordic walking, dance, exercise to music, gym, swimming, basic skills, cooking, history and maths groups.
Their Brainy dog scheme takes rescue dogs to be trained by prisoners from the local prison. The dogs then become companions to our clients or help with the rehab, motivating people to go for walks and mixing with the community. Headway Suffolk employs physiotherapist, occupational therapist and speech and language therapists. Their counsellors have prevented people committing suicide, helped them to understand their different life and role and kept families together. Their work saves lives and helps people to rebuild their life after injury or disease.
